Ink-jet Printers are operated by thrusting minute globules of liquid ink onto paper. It is a type of computer printer. It is the most commonly used as it has low cost, high quality of output, ability of printing in vibrant colour and simplicity of use.
In earlier stages, the advantage of ink-jet printer is that its operation is quieter than dot matrix printers or daisy-wheel printers. It can print with good quality and many come with photo-realistic quality colour printing. Ink-jet printings cost is less per page than other laser printers. And latest ink-jet uses stochastic to provide better quality results.
Monochrome ink sets are available and these allow the ink-jet printer to compete with silver based photographic papers which produces same range of tones neutral ‘warm’ or ‘cold’. You need to clean the old ink from the print head to switch between full colour and monochrome ink sets. This type of printer ink cartridges can be refilled.
Though it has advantages yet, it also consists of several disadvantages. The ink used in ink-jet printer is too costly. The ink cartridges have microchips to estimate ink level which can cause the printer to display an error message to the user when the ink cartridges is empty. We can ignore this error message but in most printers it will refuse to print. It has limited life time. One of the worst drawbacks of the ink-jet printer is that care must be taken with printed documents to avoid even the smallest drop of water.
Printer manufacturers claim that print heads would damage, leak, or produce inferior quality output, if you use third party inks. Third party ink is widely debated. It is said that it reduces the lifetime of the printer. Continuous ink system can hold pigment inks and have been produced for printers that were only designed to use dye-based inks. This may be replaced or filled individually. Though many options are available for cost reduction yet the ink-jet printer remains expensive. Those who want to save money prefer to buy laser printer for medium to high volume printing applications.
